Why wishes are important

In time others come to appreciate our calmness and respect us for it, even if they do not say so. When we change the way we see and respond to people and events, we can avoid conflict.

Gradually, our confidence and maturity increase, and so does our stability. This does not mean that life will become a bed of roses. Circumstances and people will test us, but instead of complaining or clashing with them, if we take them as tests, we can learn from them and grow. Leading a happy life is in our hands. We can reduce our expectations, and we will not be easily upset.

In addition, if we are unselfish and maintain a high level of self-respect, not only will our behaviour foster good relationships, our vibrations will provide comfort and strength to others, making our life more meaningful and fulfilling.

Benevolence, which is another way to speak of kindness, is the act of bestowing goodwill on another soul. For example, I may be aware of a habit that someone needs to change because it would be very beneficial for the soul, for the person as they navigate their life.

Did it bring benefit, or was I just thinking for the sake of thinking, speaking for the sake of speaking? If I am to be benevolent, then when I speak, I must say something of spiritual benefit, so that the soul I am speaking to is able to attain something. Although it is often difficult to grasp, everything that happens has some benefit.

Individual situations cannot be removed, because they are part of a subtle continuity of thought and action based on the karmic accounts we are settling. Everything is very interconnected. I just have to remember that what they are saying and doing is beneficial.

With pure feelings, love, and beautiful soft words, I can explain to someone, even if the other person is defensive or argumentative.

I can just give support, give love, and give help. Let me do it all with very good feelings. When I see things in this way, I will be able to see the subtle benefit that lies in every situation.

If that difficulty was not there, maybe the person would not have learned, gained or realised something important from that situation. So, we need to have feelings of benevolence; first towards the self, then for others, and then looking at what life is bringing to us. If we remain in the awareness of being a soul acting through a body, then when we relate to others, we will naturally say things that are beneficial for the soul.

That is what is needed now. In that way, the first benefit is to the self, and that, in turn, brings benefit to all other souls of the world. Everything becomes entertaining, joyful and light. Play the whole day with the thought that I just need to practise being benevolent.

When we do this, we feel very happy. So, our feelings are good, and there is a lot of joy and of course that brings benefit to all. This whole universe is in communion with one deep order of intelligence. This deep intelligence immerses everything on the earth. This deep intelligence is the code that seeps soil, plants, species, animals, humans and all. We are born and we die in harmony with this order of intelligence.

Every blade of grass, every sand of grain, everything, every sub-atomic particle is in harmony with deep intelligence. Without this intelligence, things may not conduct the way things do. Things communicate in harmony with that order which is pure intelligence. A bird travels thousands of miles without the use of any GPS but reaches the point where it landed last year. Sub-atomic particles steer the path that they follow in harmony with that intelligence.

The human body is led by that one deep intelligence that leads the planets and stars that leads water and the air. Life grew on earth in harmony with that one deep order of intelligence and for millions of years, we grew on the earth as humans. Humans added a new dimension to this intelligence. Humans grew a new quality, the human mind. A complex mechanism developed in billions of years. Humans started to think. Thinking was thinking and the opposite of doing. So in thinking, humans thought of doing but did not do what they thought of doing.

Thinking, because it was not doing, grew a psychological mind. What humans thought of doing but did not do, to balance that out psychologically, the mind evolved new reverse engineering. What humans thought of doing but did not do, the mind reversed it into dreams and in dreams, the mind did all that he thought of doing because the mind can only think and the process of psychological reverse engineering filled that void of doing.

Humans think that they know. You also think that you know. But do you know anything? Do you know the mystery of life and death? University professors, scholars have papers published and books written but remain more ignorant than common people because they only think. In thinking they do. They only do the thinking. Thinking complements doing. A false intelligence grows in them. They gather information without being the knower of information.

Knowledge is the opposite of knowing. Knowledge means that you observe knowledge not being there but being outside of the doer. Like a farmer is digging a trench and he is pushing forward the shovel to dig and you are watching him.

You being the watcher of that digging is not the digger. But knowledge is that you assumed that you dug without digging it. These are two opposite things. In a disguise of knowing, knowledge circulates. Therefore, the world is full of religious and knowledgeable people and knowledge but humanity deteriorates into prejudices and wars.

It seems there is something amiss. Man has not become intelligent. Man has to become intelligent enough to know that knowledge of someone cannot be your knowing because the experience of someone cannot become your experience merely by reading or hearing. Your experience will become your experience when you experience.

Knowledge creates hypnosis of intelligence. Knowledge disguises as intelligence. Knowledge hypnotises you. Knowledge stimulates the intellect. But Buddha has said not to settle for anything lesser than Buddha. Buddha never asked us to be Buddhists. To become intelligent man has to understand and know the sutra of that deep intelligence that whelms us from all directions of which we are the parts that which flows in us.

Intelligence is the opposite of ignorance. Knowing is possible through opposites. If there is ignorance there is intelligence. In contrast, you understand the reality. The contrast of darkness brings to you knowledge of light. Hell lends you knowledge of heaven. The world brings to you knowledge of transcendence that means to go beyond the boundaries of this world.

To look at the existence skeptically, Buddha did that. To disbelieve in your beliefs, you believe in mind, ego and intellect. But to be, you have to begin doubtfully. Be doubtful to know. Begin to doubt you, God, Religions. Man wants to know. To exist, man wants to know. His whole life is spent in knowing something. A lifetime of thinking that goes into what is there inside him. The gap between knowledge and knowing is a real gap.

Knowing this gap is intelligence. All senses grew for knowing. You keep a sweet on your tongue. You instantly know that it is sweet. Not the word sweet but the moment your tongue comes in contact with sweet you know. As per scientists, types of sensor cells that sense sweetness sense it and forward information into the brain where it is processed in the hippocampus and one gets to know it tastes sweet or sour.

Science cannot go beyond the definition. Science can only catch the periphery. Science does not know the centre, the truth. Dogs can sniff something afar.

Bats can make visuals out of sonar sounds. When we are injured, sick or suffering, knowing that someone else is thinking about us can be a source of comfort. It counteracts one of the worst aspects of suffering — isolation.

During periods of convalescence, we often miss school or take time off from work and other social activities, which leaves us feeling alone. When such well wishes are accompanied by offers of assistance , they can help to solve everyday challenges.

Co-workers might offer to assume work responsibilities so that a colleague can take the time needed to get better. Relatives might offer to stay with loved ones, or even bring them into their own homes to provide care. Prayer offers perhaps the most dramatic opportunity to study the health benefits of well wishes. In studies of the efficacy of prayers for others, some studies have shown small health benefits, while others have shown no effect.

As a practicing physician who teaches large numbers of medical students and residents, I believe that sharing well wishes benefits us in all sorts of ways that are not reflected in medical outcomes. For example, reaching out to others can reduce anxiety and fear, and connections formed during difficult times may persist for many years, even a lifetime.

Wishing others well is also good for the person doing the well-wishing. For one thing, we cannot genuinely do so without shifting our attention away from ourselves. Much unhappiness can be traced to an excessive preoccupation with self, which for some can reach the point that we become curved in on ourselves. Thinking of others counteracts this.

There is neurological evidence that acts of generosity make us feel less anxious and happier. Quality of Life Research, 25 5 , What is the Impact of Granting Wishes?

The Dr. Patel Wish Impact Study. A team of researchers, led by Anup Patel, MD, director of the Complex Epilepsy Clinic at NCH, examined quality of life and health care utilization among patients who received a wish and a control group who did not.

The study found patients who were granted a wish were more likely to have fewer unplanned hospital and emergency department visits.
