Why is jesus the cornerstone

Matthew , "Jesus said to them: 'Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected has become the Chief Cornerstone, this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Jesus came to His own, and instead of embracing Him, they stumbled over Him and ultimately nailed Him to the cross. Jesus also is called the Smitten Stone. In Exodus 17, we read of Moses striking a rock, which brings forth water. When Paul mentions this in 1st Corinthians , he interprets the passage prophetically: "They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them and that Rock was Christ.

The smitten stone of Exodus becomes a picture of the smitten Christ who became the fountainhead of blessing as His blood gushed forth on the cross and He became the Redeemer of the world. In Acts when Pater is addressing the Sanhedrin, Peter actually tells them, "Let it be known to you all, and to all of the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom 'you' crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the 'Chief Cornerstone. Paul writes in 1st Corinthians a, "For we are God's fellow workers, you are God's field, you are God's building. Jeremias in , take a different tack, separating the two stones and making the cornerstone one thing and the stone at the "head of the corner" another, that is, a capstone or keystone.

It is hard to visualize one stumbling over a capstone, but metaphors can be stretched. In any case, the point is that the very foundation of the church is Jesus Christ. This was prophesied by the prophets of old and fulfilled through the incarnation. Those who believe are blessed and those who stumble over that rock chosen by God are condemned.

In 1 Peter , Christ is referred to as a cornerstone chosen by God to secure a promise and that those who trust Christ will never be put to shame. As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him — you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:. It is also emphasized, in this verse, that Jesus is the living stone, which means that apart from being a cornerstone, He is a living foundation.

He understands us, the chosen people because He lives among us. In these two New Testament verses, we are assured that God gave His Son, Jesus, as a promise that we are guided, and we have a strong foundation as long as we follow Him. Just like a literal cornerstone, Christ should be followed in order for us Christians, to live a straight path.

If a cornerstone is not followed, the path of construction will end up in demise. Similarly, if we do not follow Christ, our path will end up in destruction and we will definitely go astray.

However, there are times that we do not follow Christ, yet He is still the cornerstone of our lives. What the passage means is that even if we do not constantly acknowledge Him as our cornerstone, Jesus will ultimately light our lives and reveal that He is. This is His love for us. He will always show mercy because He loves us. People who care for us in this world will be the vessel for us to see Christ as our cornerstone and ultimately, we cannot escape from the fact that Christ is the foundation of our lives.

This is the truth to that matter.
