When I was the prime minister, I promised myself not to do anything that would make people hate me. Tun Dr Mahathir, who is now the chairman of opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan, said he had no choice back then, as the police had presented all the evidence to him. He said if he were a dictator as many would call him, he could have put Anwar in jail directly instead of giving him a trial. He said: "I was angry with the police.
I asked them why they didn't give him a trial. They didn't tell me initially but later said they had given him a 'black eye'. Dr Mahathir also said he only had the power to sack Anwar as deputy prime minister and finance minister, and it was the Umno supreme council's collective decision to sack Anwar as the party's deputy president.

As he was jailed again in on another charge of sodomy, he could not lead the opposition in the general election. He made up for his absence by reconciling with his erstwhile political rival Mahathir, who by then had also fallen out with BN and helmed the recomposed Pakatan Harapan PH opposition coalition. After PH surprisingly defeated BN in the elections and formed the government, Anwar was pardoned.
He quickly won himself a parliamentary seat in a by-election, putting himself in good stead once again be a successor to Mahathir, by then Malaysian Prime Minister for a second time. In hindsight, Mahathir did not intend to pass the baton of premiership to Anwar.
