She warned against a formal coalition with the Tories in , but remained loyal to leader Nick Clegg after his tie-up with David Cameron, defending the Lib Dem leader in the face of efforts to oust him.
She retired from the House of Lords in , bowing out of parliamentary politics with a heartfelt plea for Britain to stay in the EU, five months ahead of the referendum that delivered Brexit.
