If grades were indeed changed and players were paid to stay in school, then Chizik's title isn't legitimate, anyway. Chizik isn't necessarily a bad coach purely from a football perspective, but most observers credit quarterback Cam Newton with Auburn's national championship more so than Chizik. Whatever the case, Chizik needs to be punished accordingly if the allegations are true, and every major program needs to come together in order to make sure that happens.
It can be argued that such a practice would constitute collusion, but that would be difficult to prove since the schools could just point to a potential show-cause penalty. With so many scandals surrounding college sports right now, it is paramount to weed out anyone who is contributing to them in a major way.
While it's still uncertain what Chizik was directly responsible for, if anything, his reputation has already taken a major hit. Being found guilty could very well spell the end of Chizik as a major college football coach.
Chizik still stays busy, even if the hour coaching days are over at least temporarily. He travels to speaking engagements and works as a college football analyst on the SEC Network. He has also developed a following on Twitter with his musings on life, dubbing them WordsofChizdom.
Chizik said he has received overtures about defensive coordinator jobs and some head coaching positions and doesn't rule out a return to the sidelines — though not before next season. A recent day with the year-old gym rat included a visit to a building he owns across from the Auburn campus where workers are getting one side ready for a new sandwich shop. Strolling purposefully — as always — in that direction, he stops to chat with two young men who call out "War Eagle" from the back of a moving truck.
Then it was off for a visit to one of his three Louie's catfish and wings restaurants where he advises an employee taking a semester off that college is not something you can do "half-hearted. An opposite corner is dedicated to Philip Lutzenkirchen, a popular Auburn tight end who died in a car crash. Still, there are signs Chizik is trying to stay prepared in case he returns to coaching after this fall.
Gene Chizik has never been "just a coach. Coach Gene Chizik. Meet Coach Chizik. Do what they love, not what you love. If your daughter likes to read books, sit on the floor and read books. If your son likes to play Xbox, play Xbox. I know millions of dads are grinding at work and trying to do the right thing, but they are frustrated. It could be a day or a weekend. Make a bucket list for things you want to do with your kids. The year after I was let go at Auburn, I made a list of 25 things I wanted us to do.
I went bird hunting with my son for the first time. I took my girls to Mexico on a dad vacation. No one else was allowed. I kidnapped my son and took him out of school for two days to surprise him with a Major League Baseball spring training trip to Florida— no girls allowed. I took him to his first NFL football game. One-on-one time with our kids means the world to them, because it makes them realize they are important.
